The Ceide Fields

You may think that a Neolithic landscape is something you’ll only ever get to see in history books. Not so. The Ceide Fields in County Mayo are testament to Ireland’s Neolithic forefathers and their mark still exists with stone walls, megalithic tombs and stone homes amazingly preserved under a layer of peat turf. The visitor centre is award winning so be sure to make time for inside AND out.

Roscommon Abbey

Established almost 750 years ago by the King of Connaught, Roscommon Abbey is one of those unique places where you can reach out and touch history in the form of gently crumbling ruins. King Feidhlim O'Conchobhair’s tomb remains there embossed with carvings of eight soldiers. Eerie and fascinating.

Glencar Waterfall

Strolls need a centrepiece and a place for a picnic – which is why Glencar Waterfall rates among one of Leitrim’s most pleasant experiences in this scenic county. The waterfall itself is particularly impressive after rain when it makes a great noisy fuss of smashing into the deep pool below. Build an appetite by taking the forest stroll under awning of leafy trees and to the sound of steadily rushing water.

Benbulben Mountain

Shooting out of the Sligo countryside in all its grand muscular glory, Benbulben is a giant table of a mountain. Covered in grassy moss, the texture of this great bump looks almost velvety as well as making it very inviting for walkers. The poet W.B Yeats (who featured the mountain in his works) is buried in its great shadow at Drumcliff graveyard.

Glenveagh National Park

To be a national park of stupendous beauty and scale, and host one of Ireland’s most impressive castles, makes Glenveagh National Park an overachiever. The park and castle embodies all that is epic and exquisite about Donegal. It features broad, glassy lakes, undulating hills and peaks and enough flora, fauna and wildlife to keep nature-buffs and young imaginations occupied for hours. Watch out for the golden eagles.

Surf in Sligo

The phrase ‘Blow away the cobwebs’ should conjure images of surfing at Easkey Beach in County Sligo. The glorious sounds of smooth pebbles underfoot, O’Dowd Castle standing lonely yet stoic to the West and those Atlantic waves building slowly but surely and promising the ride of a lifetime. Goodbye cobwebs.

Tee Time in Mayo

Hats off to those golfers who have teed off at Mayo’s Carne Golf Links and not been so enchanted by the scenery that they shanked their ball into the rough. The final, and believed by many to be the best, course designed by master designer Eddie Hackett, Carne Golf links is an utterly unique test. The challenge is softened by views of the Atlantic and her islands that tip the scale towards heavenly.

Cruise the Shannon in Leitrim

The Shannon touches many counties in Ireland but it could be argued that it saved its prettiest stretch for County Leitrim. The eponymous town of Carrick-on-Shannon is a berthing hub and the beginning of a river journey for many that takes in vast swathes of Leitrim’s untouched landscape of low lying hills and lakelands. All to the soundtrack of a boat gently splitting the water. Lovely.

Drop a line in Roscommon

Lough Key is well known as being one of Ireland’s most sumptuous lakes, fringed as it is with lush forest and well served by a scattering of dainty islands. But did you know it happens to be quite the angling spot, too? Ghillies are available in the region for those who fancy a guide to the waters here that host pike, bream, roach, perch and eel. So no excuse for not bringing home dinner.

Road Tripping in Donegal

Donegal’s vast valleys and sheer mountains vie for views with the Atlantic Ocean battering the choppy coast – in other words: spectacular. The Atlantic Drive takes in some of the county’s most camera-friendly views with the Rosguill Peninsula a star performer. If you have time, stay behind the wheel for the Inishowen 100 route, raising the stakes with endless beaches an historic coastal fort.
