Derry city is ideally located, acting as a springboard into some of Ireland's most dramatic and evocative landscapes from picturesque county villages, to the breathtaking hills of Donegal, the spectacular vistas along the Antrim Coast and the mountainous terrain of the Sperrins, all of which can be found within an 80km radius.
The most visibly striking historic feature of the city is the historic walls (d1613-18). It is the only remaining completely walled city in Ireland today and one of the finest examples of walled cities in Europe and they have been kept in a splendid state of preservation.
There are daily tours of the city walls and a number of tour guide companies provide inner city guided walking tours. Tours includes visits to the city walls, St Columb's Cathedral, Guildhall and craft village.
A living history tour gives you an insight into the impact the last 30 years have had on the city. The events of this period have been paramount in shaping the modern European city of today- a friendly, forward looking and vibrant city. The symbolic Hands Across the Divide Statue is a poignant reminder to both communities about reaching out the hands of friendship. A look at the famous murals throughout the city centre is testament to the role Derry played during 'The Troubles'.
The Bogside Artists have been funded by European LSP to conduct workshops and talks regarding the murals in the Bogside.
