TURIN BETWEEN TRADITION AND INNOVATION

Turin is a city on the move, full of artistic and cultural ferment, urban redevelopment, revitalisation of suburbs and renovations which are outlining the new face of the metropolis. Yet Turin is a city of great traditions, custodian of a glorious historical past. Turin is like an “open air museum” with squares and palaces that recount over 20 centuries of history. The Porte Palatine and the Quadrilatero Romano area are reminders of the ancient Roman conquest. The majestic Piazza Castello with Palazzo Reale, the Baroque buildings and the imposing cupolas of the churches celebrate the splendour of the capital city during the Savoy reign. Palazzo Carignano, site of the Renaissance Museum and the first Italian parliament, commemorates Turin as Italy’s first capital in 1861.Thanks to its great past, combined with a wide range of artistic and cultural attractions, the city received the prestigious three-star rating by Michelin Travel Guide.

ART AND CULTURE

Piemonte is rich in cultural, historical and artistic itineraries, crossing several centuries and covering each aspect of the region: from architecture to industrial archaeology, from cities to the countryside, inspired by events, people, legends, curiosities, spirituality or artisan and manual ability. The cultural heritage is made up of royal residences (ascribed to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in 1997), historical gardens, castles, fortresses and over 400 museums, ranging from the civic, public and ethnographic to eco-museums; all these are capable of guaranteeing a striking and complete offer for art lovers, and take the form of exhibition centres with displays which range from archaeology to contemporary art, from natural science to cinema, and from decorative art to anthropology.

EATING LIKE KINGS

Food and wines represent two characterizing Piedmontese aspects which are worth to be discovered. All the squares, hills and farmhouses are full of unique gastronomic tradition. The areas of Langhe, Roero and Monferrato are home of Piedmontese cuisine and wines, where the ‘Slow Food’ itineraries have been created to satisfy the most exacting gourmets.
Cherasco, Bra, Barolo, Pollenzo, Asti e Alba boast the finest wines, such as Barolo, Dolcetto, Barbaresco, Moscato, Arneis, Barbera, Favorita, Nebbiolo and sparkling wines appreciated all over the world.
Moreover Alba is famous for its white truffles, real miracles of nature, essential ingredients in many sophisticated recipes. Piemonte can also satisfy sweet tooth people with chocolate in all its forms: from famous Turin gianduiotti, to Baci of Cherasco or famous Cunesi made of chocolate and rhum

THE MOUNTAINS, PARADISE NOT ONLY FOR SKIERS

Piemonte means “land at the foot of the mountains”, which is appropriate for the region that held the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Hundreds of kilometres of slopes follow one after the other through the mountain towns of Bardonecchia, Sauze d’Oulx, Sestriere in Valle di Susa and Pinerolo. They are ideal for downhill and cross-country skiing, with ski-lifts and highly efficient visitor facilities. The Valle di Susa is not the only resort loved by skiers and sport people: Limone Piemonte is the perfect setting to ski near Cuneo, while the Valsesia presents an unforgettable view of Monte Rosa.
But it would be a mistake to think that all of this beautiful landscape is only good for skiing. Trekking, canoeing, kayaking, hang-gliding and parasailing are just some of the other sports that can be practised year-round.

THE LAKES: BLUE AND GREEN HUES

The Piemonte lakes are beautiful jewels set in majestic landscapes, where nature meets architecture and where the deep, blue waters meet with flourishing, green vegetation. From the tiny mirror-like lakes of the Alps to the famous Lakes Orta and Maggiore, there are many such gems that make the region spectacular. The territory boasts a rich natural heritage made up of enormous parks and very important protected areas, ideal for trekking, bird-watching or spotting deer and other wild animals.
