Daily Mirror Settles Defamation Action With Ryanair
On Monday, August 12, in connection to a Channel 4 Dispatches documentary scheduled to be broadcast that evening, we reported that, according to a survey, "most Ryanair pilots have serious concerns about passenger safety".
We acknowledge the Irish Aviation Authority's independent confirmation, on 15 August, that Ryanair "fully complies with all European and international regulations in all of its operations", and the previous confirmation given on September 18, 2012 of Ryanair's safety standards being "on a par with the safest airlines in Europe".
RYANAIR v MG
Ryanair acknowledges the Mirror Group’s prompt and categoric statement setting the record straight before the Court this morning in relation to a survey organised by a group of pilots who work for Ryanair’s competitors, which is neither representative of Ryanair pilots’ views nor compatible with the full safety clearance Ryanair continues to receive from the Irish Aviation Authority and other regulatory bodies.
The Mirror is the latest newspaper to recognise Ryanair’s safety record, which now spans three decades, following similar statements issued by the Belfast Telegraph, Irish Independent, Irish Daily Mail and Mail OnLine.
With one further apology due to be announced shortly, my client will be continuing to vigorously pursue their defamation action against Blakeway/Channel 4, the producers of the offending Dispatches programme, before the High Court here in Dublin.

Director of Flight and Ground Operations
We are very pleased with this morning’s settlement with the Daily Mirror, which vindicates Ryanair’s outstanding 29 year safety record.
We acknowledge the fact that the Daily Mirror has acted promptly, as did the Daily Mail which made a similar statement in open court last September.
We will now focus our efforts on defamation proceedings against Chanel 4 Dispatches and Mr John Goss who made unfounded claims about Ryanair’s safety in a recent TV programme.
Captain Ray Conway
As Chief Pilot of Ryanair, I am very satisfied with the comprehensive vindication and acknowledgement of Ryanair’s 29 year safety record by the Daily Mirror
before the Court this morning.
While I am unable to make specific comments concerning our ongoing legal proceedings regarding Channel 4’s Dispatches programme, I wish to emphasise that Ryanair cannot and will not tolerate what were totally unjustified and inappropriate allegations in relation to our industry leading safety.
Ryanair has instructed our lawyers to take all necessary action to have our defamation action against Channel 4 Dispatches brought before the Court at the earliest opportunity.
