Dempsey Wastes €100,000 to Fly to Derry & London…

SHOULDA FLOWN RYANAIR AND SAVED €99,950

Ryanair, Ireland’s largest airline, today (6th Aug) called for Minister Dempsey to explain why he wasted some €100,000 of taxpayers’ funds flying the govt jet from Dublin to Derry and then on to London when he could have travelled in his Ministerial Merc to Derry and flown with Ryanair from Derry to London saving Irish taxpayers over €99,950!!

Ryanair questioned why Minister Dempsey wasted €100,000 of taxpayers’ money to attend the McGill Summer School, in order to ‘Analyse the political, economic and administrative systems that have allowed our economy to be brought to its knees”. Perhaps Minister Dempsey now realises that wasting €100,000 on a needless flight from Dublin to Derry to London and back (when his Ministerial Merc and a scheduled Ryanair flight would have done the same job for just €50, a saving of over €99,950) is exactly the kind of Govt waste which brought Ireland to its knees in the first place.

Ryanair condemned Noel Dempsey’s latest transport mismanagement and waste, which is another in his long series of transport failures which have cost Irish taxpayers billions of euro and lost Ireland millions of passengers, including;

  • He has presided over the DAA wasting €1.2bn on the 2nd terminal at Dublin Airport (which they originally promised would cost less than €200m),
  • He has ordered the Aviation Regulator to increase Dublin Airport fees by up to 40% in 2010 to pay for this T2 white elephant,
  • He has presided over a 30% collapse in traffic at Dublin Airport, and a 40% collapse in traffic at Shannon Airport over the last two years,
  • He continues to promote the unnecessary €5bn Dublin Airport Metro which Dublin Airport passengers don’t need or want, and which Ireland now can’t afford,
  • He went ‘missing in Malta’ earlier this year when Ireland’s roads were brought to a standstill by snowfalls – and by his useless Govt’s inability to keep our roads clear.

Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said,

“Ryanair calls on Minister Dempsey to explain why he wasted €100,000 of taxpayers money just to attend a political talking shop which was looking at how his Govt has brought this country to its knees, when it is clear that Govt waste, such as Ministers’ non-essential use of the Govt jet is one of the reasons why Ireland’s economy is on its knees.

Admittedly wasting €100,000 of taxpayers’ funds on a ‘jolly’ is nothing to Minister Dempsey compared to the €1.2bn wasted on T2 or the €5bn – at least - which will be wasted on the Dublin Airport Metro, which is neither needed nor wanted by Airport passengers. Perhaps next time Minister Dempsey should “fly Ryanair” and save Irish taxpayers over €99,950.”
