Ryanair Promises to Donate Damages to Cancer Charityas legal case against ‘wildcat’ Carcassonne Strike begins
Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline, today (5 May) confirmed that it will donate any damages it receives from the legal proceeding against French trade union, Confederation General de Travail (CGT), which begins tomorrow in Carcassonne District Court, directly to La Ligue contre le Cancer which works to prevent and educate people in relation to cancer in Carcassonne and nationally.
Ryanair is seeking damages as a result of unlawful ‘wildcat’ strikes by CGT union members employed at check-in, security and refuelling which closed Carcassonne Airport without warning for three days from 25th - 27th May last and disrupted the travel plans of 4,000 Ryanair passengers including 440 passengers who had their flights cancelled as a direct result.
Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said:
“Tomorrow Ryanair will begin legal action seeking damages for the unlawful and selfish strike action of members of the Confederation General de Travail (CGT) which caused considerable hardship and costs to our passengers. Ryanair will donate any damages it is awarded to La Ligue contre le Cancer, who undertake wonderful work to combat cancer in Carcassonne and nationally, on behalf of the 4,000 Ryanair passengers who were un-necessarily disrupted in this unlawful wildcat action by the CGT workers”.
