Ryanair, Europe’s only ultra-low cost airline, today (8 June) welcomed the ruling of the Administrative Court of Palma de Mallorca Court confirming that airlines are not obliged to provide passengers with a free of charge checked in bag and that the Spanish law on the issue is to be interpreted in light of the airlines’ freedom to set their own prices.
Ryanair welcomed the decision, which is a blow to high fares airlines who factor in the cost of a checked in bags in all their high fares, as it is a victory for the most price sensitive consumers who prefer to travel light in return for lower fares and without subsidising the high fares of those who do wish to bring lots of luggage.
Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said:
“We warmly welcome the ruling of the Administrative Court of Palma de Mallorca Court which confirms that airlines are not required to provide passengers with a free of charge checked in bag as it is a major win for the most prices sensitive consumers and ensures that Ryanair can continue to incentive passengers to travel light and asking only those who require a checked in bag to pay for them.
This will ensure that our most prices sensitive passengers can continue to afford to travel by air without subsidising the cost of other passenger's checked in bags.”
