Attractions

Rodez city history

It’s an Episcopal city since the 4th century, proud of its beautiful 80 meter tall Cathedral with its impressive bell-tower.

It is a perfect introduction to Rodez’s history and identity. This charming town is easy to stroll through on foot. A sequentially marked itinerary will take you back through the city’s two thousand years of history.

The old Rodez features several historic townhouses and mansions from the 14th -17th century, or beautiful religious buildings like the chapel of the old Jesuit College.

Nightlife

Rodez culture

You will love wandering to and fro through Rodez’s footpaths and alleys, where you’ll also find some truly excellent restaurants with their regional specialities, small cafés with shadowy terraces, and beautiful open-air markets.

At night, go to MJC and listen to some concerts in an intimate atmosphere. Are you looking for a great show? If so the amphitheatre is the place to be! Joan Baez, the Moscou orchestra, and Yannick Noah have already performed there. There are many cultural organisations and which contribute to the quality of life in Rodez – enjoy!

Food and Drink

Roquefort Cheese

Did you know that Roquefort cheese comes from Aveyron just a few miles from Rodez? But it’s not the only cheese, more than 100 types of cheeses are produced in Aveyron.

No wonder that the main speciality, Aligot, is made with Laguiole cheese – a delicacy that you will no doubt try during your stay maybe accompanied by Aubrac beef and a glass of Marcillac wine, locally produced. In Rodez, you will find a wide range of places to eat, from the Michelin starred restaurants to the humble pubs, all at reasonable prices.

Activities

Aveyron paradise for outdoor activities

Those who discover the Aveyron for the first time are surprised by the variety and beauty of the landscape: from the plateaux of the Aubrac in the north to the rocky chaos of the Causse du Larzac in the south, from the sumptuous Gorges du Tarn to the superb Lot valley, nature is full of character in the Aveyron! It's an immense playground accessible to all; from canoeing to paragliding any activity is possible.

Shopping

The food kingdom!

For food shopping, the gourmets will certainly find some of the greatest regional delights in Rodez.

The open-air markets held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings and Friday afternoons are a must-do. There you’ll meet the local farmers and sample the special flavours of the region.

Behind the cathedral is another shopper’s paradise – you will find clothing and fashion for all ages, leather, handbags, fishmongers, cheese, booksellers, bakers, wine etc. It is perfect for a leisurely stroll and shopping break while visiting the old town.
