Notre-dame-des-tables

The original church was destroyed during the religious wars of the 16th century, but it is still an exciting historical destination. The name comes from the tables of the currency exchange that was linked to the spice trade, originally located in front of the church.

Pierre Richer de Belleval founded France’s oldest botanical garden in 1593. Today it is a charming array of tropical greenhouses, ancient trees and worn benches.

Le Mikve

The Le Mikve Jewish bathhouse draws its water from an underground well. It is one of few remaining buildings from medieval period when the city had a thriving Jewish population.

Maguelone

Maguelone, a few miles south of Montpellier, is home to a magical lagoon landscape with beaches, sand dunes, islands, and a gigantic 17th-century cathedral.

Espiguette Beach (Le Grau du Roi)

A wide open beach that stands out and goes on for miles, a great place to swim and for endless walk. The shallow water makes it safe for younger swimmers. However, this popular beach can get quite busy and crowded during summer time, but well worth a visit. There are also cafés available if you are feeling hungry or thirsty.

Musee Fabre

One of the biggest museums in France, exhibiting nearly 800 works with Flemish, Dutch, Italian, Spanish and French collections. This is a museum where you can admire works from the 16th to the 18th century from painters like Zurbaran, Reynolds, Tenier, Veronese and Monet. On display are also ceramics, sculptures and contemporary paintings.

Aquarium Mare Nostrum

Le Parc Zoologique de Lunaret

The park is home to 750 animals and 145 species in an 80-hectare area. It is classed as a”Free Animal Reserve and Refuge". It is located in the North of Montpellier with beautiful vegetation. Saint-Pierre Cathedral

This Roman Catholic cathedral is a national monument of France and was originally a church founded in 1364. It became a cathedral in 1536. This stunning building offers beautiful stained glass, wonderful old religious paintings and it has a attached garden. This is a attraction well worth a visit.

Place de la Comedie is a stunning square with a great buzz and is a must-see attraction. Le Jardin Des Sens

Twin brothers, and chefs, Jacques and Laurent Pourcel joined up with Olivier Château to open gourmet restaurant Le Jardins des Sens in an old building in northern Montpellier in 1988. Ten years later, it was awarded three stars in the Michelin Guide. Since then, Le Jardins des Sens has maintained its status as the premier restaurant in Languedoc.

La Compagnie De Comptoirs

After the success of Le Jardins de Sens, the owners went on to establish restaurants in several other French cities, and in London. Many of them are called La Compagnie de Comptoirs, decorated in the French colonial style, and serve French Mediterranean fare. The La Compagnie de Comptoirs in Montpellier is sometimes described as the cheaper companion of Le Jardin de Sens. That is somewhat misleading considering its first-rate interiors, food, and prices.

Rue de la Loge is the main shopping strip in Montpellier. The street starts at Place de la Comédie and is also a good starting point for visits to the Old Town. There are many interior design, fashion and souvenir shops in the Old Town. Visit Zapa (on 18, rue Foch) for their women’s fashions designed in-house, and go for the handmade notebooks at Trait (on 24, rue de l’Aiguillerie). Bookshops line Rue de l’Universit – the one aptly named Bookshop has the largest selection of literature in English (located on 6, Rue de l’Université). Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, designed the post-modern Polygone galleria just east of Place de la Comédie. It has three floors full of everything from designer fashions to a deli. Halles Laissac and Halles Castellane are two good covered food markets next to each other on rue Anatole France by Place Jean Jaurés.

A unique example in Europe of well-controlled city development, Montpellier is nonetheless rich with 1,000 years of history. People who cherish old stones and a historical ambiance love strolling through downtown Montpellier’s medieval streets, surrounded by historical monuments and antique shops and boutiques. Montpellier’s airport is located 8 kilometres (5 miles) from the city centre. It is a 15 minute trip with the airport coach. Other alternatives include taxicabs and rental cars.
