98% of travellers don't have expensive gadgets insured

Ryanair, the world’s favourite airline, today (2nd Jan) advised passengers who received ipads, smartphones and other ‘gadgets’ for Christmas to ensure they are adequately insured as such items now top thieves’ summer ‘wish lists’ after analysis of its 2011 insurance claims suggest that tourists are no longer being targeted just for expensive camera equipment but for highly prized ipads and other gadgets which can be quickly sold-on by petty criminals.
 
Ryanair’s insurance division received 17,500 claims in 2011, a 58% increase on 2010, totalling over €5.25m for lost, stolen or broken ‘gadgets’ which were not adequately insured, as more passengers bring smart technologies on holiday.
 
Ryanair passenger research showed that 75% of passengers bring a ‘gadget’ worth over €300 with them on vacation, with 97% using these items in public places, making them targets for opportunistic thieves, while 98% confirmed that they had no insurance on such items.
 
Ryanair passengers can protect their gadgets when travelling abroad with Travel Insurance Plus which provides cover of up to €/£500 against theft and accidental damage on ‘gadgets’ such as laptops, smartphones, tablets/ipads, games consoles and much more, for the duration of the passenger’s trip. Travel Insurance Plus is now available, from just €/£5on www.ryanair.com (during the booking process) to all Irish and UK residents, and will be available throughout Europe in the coming months.
