Ryanair confirms no discussions with Dept of Transport on Tourist TaxRyanair, Ireland largest airline, today ( 6th Nov) said it would be impossible for it to have ‘further discussions’ with the Department of Transport (as claimed today by Minister Mary Coughlan) on the devastating damage being done to Irish tourism by the Government’s insanely stupid €10 tourist tax, when to date no discussions have taken place between the Department of Transport and Ryanair.
In repeated correspondence with the Department of Transport they have continuously ducked the issue and claimed that the tourist tax is a matter for the Department of Finance. Ryanair fails to understand what use or value the Department of Transport is when they stand idly by doing nothing as the Irish airports lose more than 4m passengers (down 15%) this year.
Ryanair's Stephen McNamara said: “If the Department of Transport wants to do something useful about transport they don’t need 'further discussions’ about the €10 tourist tax. They should be scrapping this useless tax, which will raise less than €100m this year but will cost the Government over €150m in lost VAT receipts from the €600m visitor spend lost to the economy this year because of this tourist tax. It is time to axe the tax.”
