The Palazzo Ducale
The Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace)reflects the grandeur of Venice and the powerful role it once played as a Maritime capital of Europe. It was the Doge's residence and it also hosted many different political and social institutions; lawyers offices, the Chancellery; the Censors and Naval Offices. The Grand Council chamber, the largest room of the palace, the Ballot chamber, where the committee met to elect the Doge, and the Doge's apartments located on the second floor.
The Bridge of Sighs
One of Venice's most evocative bridges, The Bridge of Sighs received its name in the 17th century, because the prisoners who passed through it on their way to the prison cells on the other side would most likely see the beautiful sight of the lagoon and the island of S.Giorgio and freedom for the last time.
The Clock Tower
The clock shows the hours in Roman numerals, the phases of the moon and the Zodiac. It also gives indications to sailors about the tides and which months are more favorable for sailing. A large reward was given to the Ranieri brothers who built the clock tower, but legend has it that later their eyes were removed in order to keep them from repeating such a wonder.
San Marco's Cathedral
sumptuous Byzantine style cathedral that hosts the tomb of Saint Mark, the cathedral holds a dazzling collection of jewels and relics that came to Venice following the sacking of Constantinople during the crusades.
Piazza San Marco
St Mark's Square (famously described by Napoleon as the 'drawing room of Europe') with its marble arcades, lies under the domes of Saint Mark's cathedral. This is an ideal place to take a cocktail in the evening to admire the sunset over the lagoon.
