Basilica of the Pilar, "El Pilar", a heart of devotion for millions of people all over the world

Built on the site of a primitive Mozarabic church, it is endowed with different styles in construction and ornamentation. To be noted are the choir (with its exquisite choir stalls), the impressive Renaissance altarpiece in alabaster by Damien Forment, the Holy Chapel where the image of the Virgin is venerated, and the cupolas painted by Goya. A lift trip to the top of one of its towers will allow you to enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the town.

World Heritage: The Mudejar Art in Zaragoza

The masterpiece of local Gothic architecture is the Cathedral of San Salvador (St Saviour) or La Seo, where the Kings were crowned during the Middle Ages. The exterior invites our admiration, with the beautiful “mudejar” decoration of brick and tile. In the interior, the Main Altarpiece, the dome and the impressive Tapestry Museum are not to be missed.

The jewels of the Crown in Middle Ages, the beautiful Aljafería Palace (11th C.), where both Moslem and Mudejar style melt in. Most notable are the courtyards of St. Isabel and St. Martin, the beautiful oratory, the “mihrab” and the impressive multi-colored paneled ceiling of the Throne Room.

Goya: A world-wide known genius spent his youth here

Among the city’s attractions, one can see various works by Francisco de Goya, including the four complete series of engravings in the Ibercaja-Camón Aznar Museum, the frescos in the Pilar Basilica, and the oil portraits in the Zaragoza Museum and the “Goya Section” in the Ibercaja Savings Bank, where one can also visit the Infanta’s Courtyard. On the outskirts of Zaragoza, in the Aula Dei Carthusian, are some of the best examples of Goya’s early murals.
