Notre Dame

This magnificent Romanesque church lies at the very heart of the Old Town centre of Poitiers, and has become the landmark of Poitiers. It features beautiful biblical carvings on the outside as well as statues from the 15th and 16th centuries. Come by in the evening to see the church illuminated.

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre

Baptistère Saint-Jean

Le Jardin Des Plantes

This is an ideal place to take a break from the buzz of the city. The park, which was created in 1869, features around 100 kinds of trees and bushes. It also comprises a 4800 square-metre large botanical garden and a greenhouse containing 150 different plant species.

City Tour by Foot

Poitiers offers visitors three routes to explore the city by foot. Starting from the magnificent Notre-Dame-la-Grande church, you can follow three lines a blue, red and yellow one. The blue line takes you past the Saint-Pierre Cathedral and the Saint-Jean Baptistery to the town’s Episcopal quarter. The yellow line leads to the Saint-Jean de Montierneuf church, passing beautiful half-timbered houses. The red one leads to the Saint-Hilaire church and the Blossac Park. No trip to Poitiers is complete without a visit to the local arts and crafts shops. Start at the picturesque Grand Rue and pay a visit to La Maison de Poupée (151 GrandRue). Once you enter this cosy doll shop, you will be transported back to childhood immediately: marionettes, antique toys... this boutique has almost everything a child loves. Nearby, at 113 GrandRue, lies Ciergerie Guédon, a candle maker. The shop features one of the few remaining factories in France where candles are made by hand. In a different part of the city, at the Place de La Liberte, music fans are sure to enjoy the shop of instrument maker Laurent Gayraud. From violins to cellos, Mr Gayraus has been making fine instruments in Poitiers for more than 20 years. Those with a particularly sweet tooth should not miss the Rannou-Métivier on the rue des Cordeliers pedestrian street, a shop making traditional, mouth-watering biscuits and chocolate. There are also plenty of food markets in Poitiers, such as on Place Notre Dame and Rue Magenta, as well as a used books’ fair at Place Le Petit.
