The Canal du Midi: Have a lovely day out!

The Canal du Midi was designed by Pierre-Paul Riquet and took more than 12,000 men and women 15 years of stupendous work to build. Now classed by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site, the canal is 240 km long and runs from Sète to Toulouse, linking the Mediterranean to the Atlantic.
The Canal du Midi is lined with 328 works of art - locks, bridges, aqueducts, tunnels and dams, such as the 9 locks at Fonséranes, the Malpas tunnel, the canal bridge on the river Orb and the round lock at Agde, which is the only one in the world.
As well as being of historical interest, the Canal du Midi is a place to go out and explore, on foot, on roller-skates or on bikes. Or you can cruise down it on a barge, or take a boat or a skiff.

Wine and gastronomy: savour delicious Mediterranean cooking

Béziers is the historic capital of the Languedoc vineyards. It is wine, allied to a way of life and a culture, that has shaped our region, and in particular the hinterland. The landscape of vines, bright green in summer, glowing red in autumn, was created by the work of men. Their talent, passion and care during all the years past still shine through today.
There are many tasting cellars spread over the region which are there to open their doors to you. Go and visit them - you’ll discover their best wines and learn the art of wine-tasting.
These wines will accompany shellfish from the Etang de Thau, fish from the Mediterranean and charcuterie from the High Languedoc, not to mention olives and goat’s or sheep cheese. Come and discover combinations of dishes and wines that you’ve never tasted before.

The Haut Languedoc Regional Natural Park: A haven of coolness and calm

There you will find a subtle palette of contours and climates, forests and lakes. You’ll discover villages typical of the region, its extraordinary heritage, the richness of its wildlife and plants. You’ll be enchanted as you explore the heart of nature, abundant and protected, in magnificent pine forests like those of Canada, and cross the path of mountain sheep in the heights of the Espinousse.
Go climbing and rambling in the heights of the Caroux, bathe in the pure waters of the Héric, take your canoes and kayaks on the Orb - or fish in the river, go horse-riding, donkey-riding or walking. Enjoy nature to the full and discover the region off the beaten track.
Great favourites for bathing, water-sports and for unforgettable walks, these attractive lakes are wonderful places for visitors to stop and enjoy.

Cities full of art and history, festivities and traditions

Our countryside abounds with traces of the past. Since prehistoric times, men have built homes here, temples for their gods, new places to live and refuges to protect themselves from invaders.
The Greeks left their mark on Agde and the Romans on Béziers. The monks raised abbeys, such as Fontcaude, and abbey churches, such as in Capestang. The people of Pézenas built palaces in the 17th century and in the 19th, the winemakers constructed their chateaux. In Minerve, the memory of the Cathars is still alive.
Contemporary artists exhibit in many places, such as the Museum of Modern Art at Sérignan, and you will find theatrical productions and current music at Sortie Ouest and at Zinga Zanga. In summer, the entertainments are even more festive and picturesque, like the Feria of Béziers, the nightlife at the Cap d’Agde and the many festivals which take place over the whole region.
