Limoges

Limoges has retained its international reputation as the home of the arts of fire : porcelain and enamel. It has just been awarded recognition as a “Town of Art and History”. Memories of the past are linked with present-day developments. There are two museums: the Musée de l’Evêché for enamel, Adrien Dubouché for porcelain, the Maison de l’Email (enamel), factories (Bernardaud, Médard de Noblat…), workshops, specialised shops all competing to enrich, if there were any need to do so, your visit to this regional capital. As you walk around, don’t miss the old areas of the town (the Abessaille district around the cathedral, the Rue de la Boucherie and the market-halls, not to mention the daily market in the Place des Bancs).
With picturesque landscapes and a variety of lively festivals, Limoges is a vibrant city that still burns with enthusiasm.

The Dordogne Valley

From Bort les Orgues to Beaulieu this is a powerful, turbulent, fairytale valley, abundantly stocked with fish, with its riverside towns that still retain the memory of the hopes and dreams of those who have lived on its shores.
Along the Dordogne river, don’t miss Argentat, a former port for barge traffic.
Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, called the “Limousin Riviera” has a Romanesque collegiate church with a magnificently sculpted tympanum and back streets with houses full of character.
Bort les Orgues with its reservoir lake is a holiday centre where you can practise all kinds of water sports.
The Château de Val, a rocky islet whose six round towers proudly rise above the waves, is host every year to temporary exhibitions, the tannery museum, and the ‘Organ Cornice’, a phonolite cliff made up of a series of 80 to 100-metre columns that extend over 2 kilometres.

Aubusson

With a supply of wool and pure water for dyeing it both abundant in the Creuse, it was logical that the area should develop weaving as a mainstay in the Middle Ages. Six centuries of patience and creativity have made Aubusson and Felletin into world-famous tapestry centres.
Aubusson still has an international reputation. A visit to the departmental tapestry museum, to the Maison du Tapissier, to workshops and factories or to the Château de Boussac will enable you to become better acquainted with this skill and with all the artists who have played a part in its renewal.
Set on the border of the Creuse, it remains discrete and authentic with a strong and fabulous rural inheritance.

Pompadour : where the Anglo-Arab breed began

Limousin has always been a horse-breeding region, a tradition kept up by successive Lords. Back in the 13th century, 2 Syrian stallions were brought back to Limoges. Others followed around the 14th and 15th centuries. But it was the Marquise who showed great inspiration and began the success story that was to be the Pompadour Stud.
A visit to the castle and its national stud farm is something not to be missed.
Every summer you will enjoy first class races on the hippodrome in front of the castle and many other horse events.

Gastronomy : tastes of Limousin

Limousin knows exactly how to take advantage of the flavours of its local produces : beef, truffles, blueberries, walnuts, chestnuts, Golden Delicious apples and mushrooms. Be sure to savour some of the traditional specialities including: ceps, Saint-Yrieix Madeleines, Saint-Léonard marzipans, Creuse hazelnut cakes, Correze liqueurs and "clafoutis" (tart made with cherries and batter). Discover the Art of Living at the Strawberry festival which takes place every year in May in Beaulieu, or the Chestnut festival in Dournazac at the end of October. Don’t miss the apple trail and the walnut route.
You fill find all these produces on the local markets (Limoges, Brive, Guéret...).
