LÜBECK: GREAT SHOPPING IN MEDIEVAL ATMOSPHERE

Lübeck, once the former 'Queen of the Hanseatic League', is today a modern city enclosed by historic walls. There is good reason to be proud of it, as the UNESCO has declared the intact ensemble of churches, merchants' houses, warehouses and small narrow alleys in the Old Town part of the world’s cultural heritage. But the Old Town is no decorated showcase for tourists. The impressive Town Hall is still in use. A pedestrian area starts here, where the city’s popular shopping streets are lined with town houses from the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classic period, which have been put under a preservation order. All the main churches can be found in the Old Town: St. Mary’s, the Cathedral, St. Peter’s, St. Gill’s, St Jacob’s. Their 7 spires still dominate the city’s skyline. A wealth of individually-owned shops can be found at Hüxstraße, Fleischhauerstraße and Königstraße. They are the places to look for designer fashion, accessories and jewellery, also art and design for the home, foody treats and a host of creative ideas. A brand-new shopping guide in English is available at the tourist office, located on Holstentorplatz 1.

MARZIPAN

If you think of Lübeck, chances are high you'll be thinking of marzipan, too. After all, as the saying goes, "The surest way to a man's heart is through his stomach." The same surely applies to women, too. Lübeck's reputation as the 'marzipan capital' stretches back to 1800. In truth, no one really knows whether marzipan was the brainchild of a particularly talented and clever confectioner or the product of a contest among the then-famed confectioners of Lübeck. To find out more about marzipan and its history visit the Niederegger Marzipan Salon at Breite Straße 89. And don’t forget to try the delicious marzipan cake!

WILLY-BRANDT-HOUSE LÜBECK

In its permanent exhibition the Willy Brandt House at Königstraße 21 presents the life and legacy of the Federal Chancellor, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and son of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. You can explore the 20th century by following his trail through seven rooms, from the Weimar Republic to the reunification of Germany. A remnant of the former Berlin Wall is on display in the museum’s garden.Opening hours: daily: 10.00 – 18.00, Admission free
