Haugesund Airport is situated 14 Km outside of Haugesund city. There is a bus connection to the city centre and also to Stavanger and Bergen. The journey time to Haugesund is 20 minutes and tickets cost 50 NOK, the journey to Stavanger takes 2 hours and costs 160 NOK, the bus to Bergen takes 3 hours and 30 minutes and costs 220 NOK. All journeys are operated by Kystbussen and leave from outside the terminal building; timetables and any additional info can be found on www.kystbussen.no

Nordvegen History Centre - experience Norway’s Birthplace

Nordvegen History Centre – one of Norway’s most important areas within national history!

For 3000 years chieftains and kings controlled the strait Karmsundet – Nordvegen – the shipping lane that gave Norway its name.

At Nordvegen History Centre you can learn about the sovereigns that controlled the coast of Norway from Avaldsnes. Some of them are known from kings’ sagas and old songs. Others are known from archaeology.

You will also get a glimpse of the magic world that people once believed to be real. You’ll meet sorcerers, female warriors and Norse gods.

Old Skudeneshavn - a white haven by the North Sea

The charming town Skudeneshavn is situated at the southernmost tip of the island Karmøy. The “old town” consists of 130 well-preserved wooden, white houses originating from the 1800s, when the herring-fishing was at its peak.

Skudeneshavn is a charming little town surrounded by a fascinating cultural landscape.

Skudefestival – this is the largest gathering of coastal culture in Western Norway with boats of all categories; old wooden boats, veteran boats, modern boats, sailing boats and tall ships. The town is full of life around the harbour. There are markets stalls in the town square and art exhibitions in Søragadå, Old Skudeneshavn. Craftsmen demonstrate handcrafts from olden days connected to sea and shipping. There is entertainment during the daytime and in the evenings - with local and national artists.

Haugesund – a cultural and festival town

Haugesund is a young, vibrant town dating back to Viking times. The Viking, Harald Hårfagre, united Norway as a kingdom here.

Today, Haugesund is one of Norway's most popular congress and festival towns. First-class hotels and restaurants combine with a town centre where several hundred shops and a diverse cultural life cater for the most demanding tastes. Haugesund is a popular guest harbour - you can sail right into the heart of the town, while remaining only a few minutes from the wild and scenic Haugalandet countryside.

Activities

Åkrafjorden and Langfoss - one of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls

With its 612 m drop (2008 feet), Langfoss is the fifth largest waterfall in Norway. It is located at the end of Åkrafjord. There is an easy-to-climb footpath all the way to the top, where the views are magnificent.

The landscape is like a string of pearls with the cascading Langfoss Waterfall the most impressive of them all.

The contrasts in Åkrafjorden are huge: Naked mountain sides, luscious pastures, still-reflecting fjords and cascading glacial waters, Stone Age remains and small power stations; all inspiring admiration for the people who live and have lived here. On the roadless north side of the fjord we can trek along overgrown tracks between idyllic small farms, while traffic whisks trough the new tunnel on E134 on the south side. A short fjord cruise leaves you with lasting impressions.

Røldal ski resort – "The Deepest snow in Europe"

From one of northern Europes highest base areas, 800 m.a.s.l, six lifts transports you all the way to 1300 m.a.s.l.

The entire resort is situated above the treeline, offering you wide open areas for skiing and riding, as opposed to the narrow trails through the woods. Due to our unique high-alpine environment, the number of prepared trails will vary, but normally around a dozen trails totalling 15 km are open.

Our lifts have a total capacity of 5680 people per hour, and the transport time from base to summit is around 10 minutes.

Our season lasts from November/December until mid-May. Average snowfall is 1100cm (440 in.)

The island of Røvær - 110 inhabitants and 1 car

Røvær is an island located 25 minutes off the coast of Haugesund. With 110 inhabitants and only one car, this is a community that few of us have experienced before!

The tour starts with a boat ride from the pedestrian quayside in Haugesund. The boat has several daily departures all year round.

Walking around the island will give you a glimpse of its history, everyday life and you can enjoy the great scenery. A fun fact about the island is that none of the marriages entered into in the chapel have ended in divorce…

The island hotel provides accommodation, activities, food, snacks, drinks and great hospitality.

VIKING RAIDS TO AVALDSNES

Interested in following in the footsteps of King Harald the Fairhaired and discover the rich history of the Vikings? Be a Viking for a day, dress, eat and act like they did for more than 1000 years ago. We will take you to a Viking Farm, a stone church from the Middle Ages, a modern history centre, ancient burial mounds and stone monuments. Did you know that Avaldsnes was also Norway’s oldest royal seat and that the name Norway is derived from here? We will retell both the known and not so well known history of the people who have lived here through 3000 years - the history we are all part of.

EXCURSION TO ÅKRA FJORD AND LANGFOSS WATERFALL

Åkrafjord is located at the innermost part of Haugalandet, close to the Hardangerfjord, and is a narrow fjord with steep mountains on each side. Langfoss waterfall is the 5th highest in Norway and has been nominated as one of the 10 most beautiful waterfalls in the world. Experience fjord sightseeing, tractor safari, hiking trips and local cuisine. Combine farm visits with wandering in the wild and untamed nature along the ancient tracks at the untouched side of the fjord.

REAL ATMOSPHERE IN THE OLD TOWN OF SKUDENESHAVN

The charming town of Skudeneshavn is situated at the tip of the island Karmøy. The history of the town can be traced back to the 1800s when the herring-fishing period created a hectic industry, and the “old town” with its 125 houses and sailors’ cottages were built. Here, you can relive the era, stroll through the small streets, visit the local museum, and conclude the day with a meal in one of the town’s cosy restaurants. Experience the real atmosphere of one of the best-preserved small towns in Norway.

The idyllic islands of Røvær and Utsira are just a short trip by boat from Haugesund.
