Date Night: Luxembourg City

It’s your anniversary, your husband’s birthday, the celebration of her new job, or just any other reason to say I love you.  What do you do?

Sure, you can book the standard night out but what if you could step it up a notch….tell him how much he means to you or tell her that she really is that special!

My husband and I have set out to explore Europe’s most exciting cities and hidden treasures to give you a tried and tested Date Night itinerary that’s sure to win the heart of your other half.

DATE NIGHT: Luxembourg City

Bordered by Belgium, France and Germany, Luxembourg is often overlooked by city breakers, but this gem of a city is warm, inviting and full of charm.

Nestled in a gorge and still preserving a portion of its former fortress wall, Luxembourg City is a labyrinth of nooks and passageways, twisting walkways and shady spots filled with flowers – basically everything you’ll need to dial up the romance.

The city’s origins are built on a love story. Legend has it that the first Count of Luxembourg (Count Siegfried) fell in love with a beautiful mermaid called Melusine who lived in the river that surrounded the fortress walls of Luxemburg City.

The story goes that she magically made the Castle of Luxembourg appear on the city’s Bock rock on the morning after their wedding.

Romantic Walks

Take a stroll on the Corniche, also called ‘the most beautiful balcony of Europe.’  Pass through beautifully manicured parks and gardens or wonder at the UNESCO Heritage Casemates, an underground military defence system of tunnels built in the 10th century.

Luxembourg City was once one of the most envied fortress cities of Europe, even earning itself the nickname ‘Gibraltar of the North’.  The Casemates are full of mystery with twisting tunnels, secret pathways and dark corners – perfect spots to steal a kiss.

Enlightenment

Visit the Lëtzebuerg City Museum and learn of the city’s 1000 years of history or marvel at the rich archaeological collection, discovered during various excavations at the National Museum of Art and History.

We loved Mudam Luxembourg Museum of Modern Art. Not only is it worth checking out for its fantastic international collection but also for its eye-popping architecture.

Hear the Story

Luxembourg City is full of fun and fascinating facts.  If you’re interested in learning more about the history, a group tour or private guide is the way to go.

Alternatively, the Luxembourg City Tourism Office is an excellent place to find out about tours, attractions and walks.

Don’t forget to check out the town residence of the Grand Duke, one of the prettiest façades in the city.  If you’re visiting during the summer months, schedule a guided tour of the grand-ducal palace.

Where to Eat

“I wanted to make a chocolate that would never be forgotten. To create a unique chocolate moment for every individual taste.”

And at Chocolate House located in front of the grand ducal palace, owner Nathalie Bonn has done just that.  Each chocolate creation is definitely a feast for the eyes as well as the belly.

Lunch

There’s no better way to get to know the city than to sit outside and take in the beautiful surroundings. Pull up a table on the beautiful terrace of Restaurant Bosso or for a more casual burger and beer joint, try Scott’s Pub. Both are located near the river. Sweet tooth? Don’t miss the madeleine cake at Lea Linster’s Delicatessen.

Dinner

Grand gestures and romance go hand in hand and nothing says special like indulging in a truly fabulous meal.  Just fifteen minutes outside Luxembourg City in the beautiful mansion of Esch-sur-Alzette.

Renato Favaro opened Favaro in 1989 and has been dazzling his guests with Italian gastronomical delights ever since.

Inspired by central Italian cuisine and infused with international touches, Favaro is renowned for its seasonal menu and specially chosen wine pairings.

Soak up the mansion’s luxurious atmosphere while Renato guides you through the culinary experience. The chef’s signature dish? A fondant of Sicilian aubergines with a coulis of August tomatoes and gambas a la plancha. Incredible. We thoroughly enjoyed the nine-course tasting menu.

Where to Stay

Parc Beau-Arts/ Place De Arms: Centrally located, this plush 5-star hotel, right on the Place De Arms Square is a completely renovated 18th century building.  Classic and beautiful, it’s perfect for couples planning a romantic escape.

Sofitel Grand: For more modern tastes, we highly recommend the Sofitel.  Its sleek design and top notch facilities provide everything you need for a relaxing getaway.

One Last Tip

A must do (whether you stay here or not) is the L’Etoile du Top Floor.  This bar/ restaurant boasts the best panoramic views of the city’s downtown area. Enjoy twinkly sights from Luxembourg City to Gare to the Grund with everything in between.
