London Stansted Airport Overview

When you fly London to Gran Canaria you’ll be departing from London Stansted Airport. Stansted airport is one of the busiest airports in the UK and handles over 28 million passengers on an annual basis. As it is such a busy airport and close to central London, there are plenty of public transport services available.

To get to Stansted Airport you can take a National Express coach which runs 24 hours a day and has 15 pick-up points around central London. There is also the more direct route by train via the Stansted Express which runs every 15 minutes and takes only 47 minutes from London Liverpool Street. If travelling by car, Stansted Airport is around 68km outside of central London and is just off the M11 motorway.

Gran Canaria Airport, sometimes known as Gando Airport is the sixth busiest airport in Spain and the busiest airport in the Canary Islands. The airport is located in the eastern part of Gran Canaria on the Bay of Gando (Bahía de Gando), 19 km (12 mi) south of the city of Las Palmas. A number of bus routes connect Gran Canaria Airport with several key points of the island, including its capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

  • It is estimated that the island of Gran Canaria started to form after a volcanic eruption between 9 and 14 million years ago and is the third oldest island of the Canary Islands. 
  • Gran Canaria is known as a "Miniature Continent" due to the different climates and variety of landscapes found, with long beaches and dunes of white sand, contrasting with green ravines and picturesque villages. A third of the island is under protection as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
  • The Carnival of Las Palmas is one of the most famous Carnivals in Spain. The event is held each February and hosted by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Events include the Queen Gala and Drag Queen Gala. The main parade, or "Cabalgata", is viewed by 200,000 people every year along with its six kilometre route across the city.
  • There are 146 protected sites across the Canary Islands and 33 of these are located on Gran Canaria. These are made up of six nature reserves, two integral nature reserves, two natural parks, ten natural monuments, seven protected landscapes and four sites of scientific interest. 
  • The 1956 film 'Moby Dick', starring Gregory Peck, was shot on the beach of Las Canteras, Gran Canaria.
