Fly to the Canaries

Book cheap flights with Ryanair and discover the Canary Islands!

Overview:

The Canary islands are one of Europe’s top holiday destinations, and it’s easy to see why. Obviously, a semi-tropical climate might be one of their biggest draws – their location in the Atlantic, just 90 miles or so from off the coast of north Africa, means the archipelago basks in almost year-round sun, with temperatures rarely dipping below 18 in winter.

Beyond the sunshine, each island in this archipelago of seven has its own unique draw.  The diversity of these islands is really remarkable - from black sand beaches and moon-like volcanic landscapes to wide golden strands and lush, dense green forest, the Canary Islands have something to offer any kind of holidaymaker.

If all you want to do is book your flights to the Canary Islands, stretch out on a lounger and bask in the sun, sipping on cocktails and slapping on sunscreen, then you have your pick of resorts to choose from on any of the four main tourist islands – Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife.  Each one has famously beautiful beaches and superb resorts in which you can lounge to your lazy little heart’s content.

For active holidaymakers, well, each of the Canary Islands has plenty of activities for you to choose from, so it really just depends what you want to do. Fuerteventura is well known as the surfing island, and there are plenty of great schools offering lessons, surf camps, or even just board rental for anyone who wants to hit the waves. For cyclists and athletes, Lanzarote is the dream destination with a burgeoning cycling scene and Lycra-clad athletes everywhere – it even hosts its own iron man competition. Hikers will absolutely love the walking trains in Gran Canaria, and Tenerife is a superb place to go kayaking and snorkelling.

If you’re booking flights to the Canaries because you want to party, you won’t find it difficult to locate the fun, no matter which of the islands you fly to. Fueteventura is probably the most quiet of the islands but even that has a cool after-surf party scene in Corralejo. For wilder nights, try Gran Canaria’s famous Playa del Inglés, Playa de las Américas in Tenerife, or Lanzarote’s Puerto del Carmen.

Getting Around:

Lots of people like to combine their cheap flights to the Canaries with some low cost car hire, as driving offers holidaymakers the freedom to explore an island at their own pace. Each of the islands has its own intercity bus service, and if you’re just trying to get from the airport to your resort this may work well for you – just make sure you check your timetables and plan your route before you go.  If you want to do a little island-hopping while you’re there you can take ferries between the islands, though prices and timetables vary depending on the season.

Cuisine:

The Canary Islands have a cuisine that’s an interesting mixture of some native Guanche cuisine with plenty of Spanish, African, and Latin American flavours, and there are a few local treats that visitors should definitely try. Most famously, the islands love their mojo sauces – red and green – which are the perfect accompaniment to the islands’ famously fresh seafood and ‘wrinkled potatoes’ (papas arrugadas).

The Canaries Must-Sees

Each island has its own major attractions, whether that’s stunning beaches and landscapes or fascinating culture, art and architecture. On Tenerife, Mount Teide and its observatory are hugely popular with visitors, as is the Museum of Nature and Man and Siam water park. If you go to Lanzarote you should visit some of the famous sites built by César Manrique, and don’t miss the fascinating and beautiful Timanfaya National Park. Gran Canaria is renowned for some truly beautiful natural scenery that you’d be crazy not to visit, as is Fuerteventura.
