Known as the “Greek Pompeii”, Akrotini is an incredibly well-preserved site that offers a fascinating insight into what life was like on the island in around 1450 B.C.

Santorini is home to the most recognised, active volcanic structure in the South Aegean Sea.

The volcano has erupted around 12 times in the last 200,000 years with the most recent happening in 1950.  Take a tour and you’ll get to explore its surface craters.

Getting around

There’s no better way to explore the quaint villages of Santorini than by foot. To get from town to town, the best option is to use Santorini’s local bus service operated by KTEL. There are routes from Fira to many destinations around the island including to and from the airport. Alternatively, you can rent a car using Ryanair Car Hire and make your own way around after your Santorini flights. If you want to visit a few different islands during your stay there is a ferry available that departs from Athinios.

 

What to eat in Santorini

Santorini is heaven for foodies, offering a wonderful mix of traditional Greek food and Mediterranean cuisine. Some foods you absolutely have to try during your stay include Fava, a yellow split pea purée. The local Santorini tomatoes  are the star ingredient in Domatokeftedes, a fried vegetarian dish consisting of peppers, onions, mint and aromatic herbs.
