Five fun facts about Bologna

  • Bologna has several different nicknames that neatly sum up the city: “La Grassa” (The Fat – that rich cuisine), “La Rossa” (The Red – for its traditional political leanings and its ochre roofs) and “La Dotta” (The Learned – its university claims to be the world’s oldest).
  • Home to the oldest University in the world which was founded 1088, students at the Università di Bologna have two superstitions. They avoid climbing to the top of the Torre Degli Asinelli, which is one of the two landmark towers in the city and they never walk across the middle of the Piazza Maggiore. To do so, means you may not graduate.
  • Bologna is the setting for two of the Guinness World Book of Records’ strangest entries - the world’s tallest wig measuring 14.3 meters, and, the largest chocolate coin weighing a hefty 658 kg.
  • If you walk down Strada Maggiore and reach the entrance of Corte Isolani, a passage that connects Strada Maggiore to Piazza Santo Stefano, you can look up and see three medieval arrows still hanging from the portico. A legend tells that they were shot upwards because a young naked girl who was looking down from a window of the building had distracted three passing bandits.
  • The city’s poticoes stretch for over 3700 metres
