Malmo is a coastal city in the south of Sweden, and lies at the eastern end of the iconic Oresund Bridge just a short drive from Copenhagen. It’s a vibrant and interesting city, with plenty of historical sites including Malmo castle and the Gamla Staden. There are plenty of futuristic sites too - including the redeveloped waterfront area of Vastra Hamnen with its ‘turning torso’ skyscraper. And remember, when you book cheap Malmo flights, you’re landing just a short journey from Copenhagen too – so although there’s plenty to keep your feet firmly on Swedish soil, you can always nip across to the Danish capital.
When to book flights to Malmo
Spring and summer in Malmo is beautiful, and if you fly to Malmo from May through to September you’ll enjoy longer sunnier days making it a pleasure to walk the city’s streets, sit in its parks, and even swim in the shores of its beach (Ribersborg, a.k.a. ‘Scandinavia’s Copacabana). There are numerous festivals and events on during summer too.
If you book flights to Malmo any time from October to April, things get a lot more chilly and you should take this into account when packing (lots of layers)! But the city is still beautiful, particularly for the month of December when the Christmas lights are twinkling (and you can visit Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens).
What to see in Malmo
There’s loads to see and do in the city, so start doing your research as soon as you book your cheap Malmo flights so you can tailor your itinerary perfectly to suit your interests. Of course you’ll want to see Malmo Castle, and you should set aside a good few hours (if not a whole day) for this, because there’s a lot more to it than turrets and moats – inside the castle grounds you’ll find the Museum of Natural History, an aquarium and zoo, and the City Museum. Close to the castle you’ll find Malmo’s technology and maritime museum, which has a complete U3 submarine which you can get inside and explore (unless you’re claustrophobic, in which case you may want to sit this one out)!
Malmo’s main squares, Lilla Torg and Stortorget, are both must-sees, and fairly hard to miss anyway - two great places to have a coffee or drink in a square-side café/bar and watch the world go by. Of course you should see the Oresund bridge, and there are many points along the coast where you can get superb photos on it – just think about the time of day you’re going and where the sun will be! The City Library is really worth seeing, and if the weather is nice, try to get to some of Malmo’s beautiful parks – there are many of them and the city is famous for its green spaces.
And, of course, Copenhagen is just a short drive away, so you can easily fly to Malmo, book a hotel in Malmo, but visit two cities for the price of one!
Getting Around
Public transport here is efficient and fairly cheap, which is a good thing because while Malmo is not a massive or crowded city, it is quite spread out. Green buses are the ones that operate within the city and yellow buses will bring you on your regional journeys.
If you want to take the train to Copenhagen, it’s just a 20 minute journey. Some people prefer to drive the bridge, and if you’re one of them, then simply book car hire while booking your Malmo flights.
What to eat in Malmo
Swedish Aggakaka is a dish that originated in Scotland, but the Swede’s have their own version. The Skane version of this egg cake is topped with crispy pork and of course it contains lingonberries – a perfect bite of Sweden. There’s a lot of wild game hunting in Sweden and as such, they know what to do with Venison. Try to taste some while you’re in the Malmo. Roast goose is a popular Malmo dish in winter, and marinated herring is beloved all year round, and should be obligatory for anyone who books flights to Malmo, or anywhere else in the country!
