Flying to Munich must reads

Why Munich?

Munich is a beautifully contradictory city, one that is high-tech and ultra-modern while retaining a deep respect for the traditions it was built on. It probably helps that one of those traditions is drinking a lot of excellent beer, but that’s neither here nor there. The point is, when you fly to Munich you get the best of both worlds; the gleaming skyscrapers and BMWs, but the Dirndl and Oompah bands too.

Book Munich flights, and discover the city of laptops and lederhosen for yourself!

When to book flights to Munich

You may have heard of a little beer festival in the city called Oktoberfest, it’s kind of a big deal. Over 6 million people descend on Munich every year in October to drink beer, dress up, eat loads of rotisserie chicken and sausage, and generally have a ball. You need to book your Munich cheap flights early for this time of year, as they sell out fast.

If you don’t like the idea of huge crowds of drunken revellers, Munich is a beautiful place to visit all year round. Summer is warm and beautiful, but it’s the busiest time to be in the city. book cheap Munich flights in April/May if you want beautiful spring sunshine, but a little more space to yourself on Munich’s beautiful streets.

What to see in Munich

There’s a huge amount to see and do in Bavaria’s  beautiful capital, from beerhalls and Bayern Munich FC to the incredible art and architecture. Your main mission when you fly to Munich is to discover – and we mean really discover and experience – Gemütlichkeit.

Gemütlichkeit is a very German thing, and Munich is the perfect place to find it. It doesn’t have a direct English translation, but it means a general sense of wellbeing, cosiness, good cheer and contentment.

One place where you might find Gemütlichkeit in Munich is in the city’s famous beer halls. Bavaria and Munich are world-renowned for these halls – and, of course, the amber nectar served within. The biggest one in Munich, and one you should absolutely not miss, is the Hofbräuhaus. It’s a huge beer palace that has multiple big dining rooms and capacity for 1,300 people to eat and drink until they are merry. It’s super traditional and a lot of fun, and it’s also a great place to try Munich’s famous white sausage.

In terms of the ‘big’ sights that you don’t want to miss when you book flights to Munich, there are definitely a few to put on your to-see list.  Marienplatz, the English Garden, the municipal gallery, and Asam Church are worth a visit, and if you’re a fan of German cars, you’ll love visiting the BMW museum where you can learn about the history of the famous luxury car brand as well as the development of cars and motorbikes over the years.

Getting around Munich:

The public transport network in Munich is  excellent, and comprises of a U-Bahn, a tram system, the bus and the S-Bahn railway. Munich is a very walkable city though, particularly the centre, where most of the important sights and landmarks are located. Marienplatz is the perfect starting point for a walking tour of the city.

The city also has the highest density of taxis per person in Germany, so they are easy to flag down if you need one. Driving is not the best way to get around the city centre, but if you want to explore the Bavarian countryside, car hire is a great option for you.

What to eat in Munich

Sausages, and lot of them. The Bavarians love a sausage, and the most famous one in Munich is without question the weisswurst. These are white sausages made from veal and back bacon, boiled and served in their water with fresh salty pretzels and mustard. Not the most aesthetic food you’ll ever eat, but they are delicious and you can’t get much more Munich than this!
