Flying to Palermo must reads

Why Palermo?

Fly to Palermo and discover not just the capital, but the whole, beautiful island of Sicily. Palermo is a wonderful introduction to Sicily and with flights to Palermo you’ll land right in the thick of it.

Spend a little time getting to know the bustling streets and markets, the marble sculptures of Gangeri, the palazzos and the opera house, before moving on to the stunning beaches of Sicily’s northern coast.

When to book cheap flights to Palermo

May-June and September-October are the optimal times to fly to Palermo, when kids are still in school and the oppressive heat of summer hasn’t quite hit yet (or has just passed).  It’s still blissfully sunny at this time of year with temperatures easily hitting the mid-twenties during the day. You’ll find cheap Palermo flights and hotels more easily during the autumn and winter months, but if you want that Sicilian heat, and long days spent laid out on white sands, then April onwards is the time to fly to Sicily.

If you’re more intent on hiking and walking, exploring historical sites and being active, you might be quite happy to visit in the winter months, when Palermo hotels and Palermo flights are cheap and the weather is mild and perfect for lots of walking!

What to See in Palermo

Book flights to Palermo and get ready to be thoroughly seduced by the City of Delights – and it didn’t earn its nickname for nothing. It really is full of them, and we don’t just mean the pastry-based delights that you’ll see in every café in the city (though cannoli are an excellent way to start your day with in Palermo).

Palermo’s delights lie in its beautiful architecture, an intoxicating blend of Arabic, Roman, Greek, Norman, and Byzantine influences. Go to see the Palazzo dei Normanni (and in particular, the Capella Palatina), the church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti (and its gardens), and the beautiful tile collection on display at the Stanze al Genio. See the Teatro Massimo from the outside, certainly, but if you can, get tickets for a show there once you have your cheap Palermo flights booked and know when you’ll be in the city.

Palermo’s delights beyond the city are plenty. The beaches and landscape of this part of the island are breathtakingly beautiful, and there are some 150km of stunning coastline for you to discover when you book cheap Palermo flights.   There are plenty of beaches for you to choose from, so it really is a case of deciding what kind of beach you want - the quiet peaceful beauty of Lascari, the family-friendly (and local’s favourite) Mondello, the youthful fun atmosphere at Ficarazzi, or an off-the-

Getting around Palermo

Within the city itself, getting around by foot is the clear winner. It’s a fantastic city to walk, to soak up the atmosphere and interact with locals. If you need transport, there is a bus service that’s fairly reliable and really cheap, if a little confusing.

For further explorations throughout the region of Palermo and beyond, car hire is your friend. This is available on Ryanair Car Hire – reserve your car when you book your flights to Palermo and it’ll be waiting when you land!

What to Eat in Palermo

This is really something that deserves its own article (and here’s a good start) because the food in Palermo is something special. Cannoli are definitely something to try – we’d book flights to Palermo for this pastry alone.

There are plenty more specialities for you to sample in Palermo, from the slightly more adventurous ones -  barbequed lamb intestine to chickpea rolls and beautiful arancini (stuffed rice balls). We recommend you get stuck in and try everything – you didn’t book flights to Palermo to eat chips and burgers after all!
