BordeauxBordeaux is an excellent place to live. A dynamic urban area, the city benefits from both historical and wine-related heritage. On the lively café terraces and in the friendly urban environment, discover an endless abundance of architectural and historical treasures, as well as shopping, sports and cultural activities. From the “Port of the Moon” to the Quinconces Esplanade, and the Grosse Cloche bell tower to the Porte Cailhau, the capital of South-West France invites you to share the many riches of Bordeaux, which led to its classification as a World Heritage site in 2007.
Beyond city limitsIt is no coincidence that the South-West is one of the most popular regions for tourism in France, as it is the ideal place for holidays. With a sunny climate, an unspoilt natural environment and a variety of landscapes, the South West is brimming over with activity. To the West of Bordeaux, just 30 minutes by car, lie 250 kilometres of fine sandy beaches which lend themselves perfectly to surfing and relaxation. In the South, the Pyrenees provide a natural border with Spain, offering exceptional views and an adventure playground for hikers and skiers. To the East, the forests of Périgord and the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park (the largest in Europe!) boast pine trees, cep mushrooms and opportunities for cycling.
Bordeaux life styleThe way of life in the South West is closely linked to the arts of the table, and the wine region constitutes a tradition and heritage in itself. Wine connoisseurs will be in their element, with several châteaux offering activities and tours based on the pleasures of wine. Indulge in wine tourism and discover the medieval villages of Saint-Emilion and Margaux and Sauternes. The region also boasts gastronomy that is full of surprises – throughout the fresh season until the end of March, marchés au gras offering capons, ducks, geese and foie gras, are held throughout Aquitaine. Authenticity and a great atmosphere are guaranteed! It’s certainly true that the area prides itself on festivity and friendliness. Throughout the year, the towns and cities in the region come to life with Landes and Basque festivals, concerts in the châteaux of Périgord and countless shows staged at Bordeaux’s Grand Theatre.
SportsThe diversity of landscapes in the region is ideal for a multitude of activities in all seasons. In winter, the Bordeaux region provides enthusiasts with snowy ski resorts combined with the authenticity of family-friendly mountain villages. There’s something to do in every season! In the summer season, holidays by the Atlantic Ocean offer thalassotherapy centres, over 50 golf courses and globally renowned surfing hotspots. Further inland, tourism is more focused on nature, with hiking, horse riding, cycling and river canoeing/kayaking to keep you entertained.
EventsThere’s so much going on, it’s difficult to know where to start when it comes to events! One of the many pleasures of living in Bordeaux is the year-round schedule of festive, sports and artistic events. Here are a few examples to give you an idea:
Taking place at the end of January, the Bordeaux Contemporary Art and Antiques Fair is the largest fair organised in the region.
At the beginning of February, the Jumping de Bordeaux hosts the final of the world show jumping championships.
In March, carnivals are celebrated throughout the Aquitaine region.
In June, Bordeaux fête le vin offers four days and nights of wine tasting, brotherhood parades, concerts and firework displays.
