April to June and September to October are generally the best periods for comfortable sightseeing, outdoor activities and milder crowds. July and August are best for peak beach weather but are typically the busiest and hottest months. The Algarve tourism authority describes the region as mild and suitable for visits throughout the year.
The Algarve is known for its beaches, golden cliffs, calm Atlantic waters, golf courses, protected natural areas, historic towns and fresh fish and seafood cuisine.
Key places include Faro's historic centre, Tavira, Silves Castle and old town, Lagos, Sagres, the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the Vicentina Coast, and the beaches and cliff scenery around Albufeira, Carvoeiro and Portimão.
Allow at least 4 to 5 days for a highlights trip covering a few beaches, one or two historic towns and a natural area. Plan 7 to 10 days to explore both the western and eastern Algarve at a relaxed pace.
The Algarve offers a range of budgets. Faro cost references list an inexpensive restaurant meal at about EUR 12 and a mid-range three-course meal for two at about EUR 40, excluding accommodation. Coastal resorts, peak summer dates, golf and boat excursions can substantially increase costs.
The Algarve has a generally mild, sunny climate with low annual rainfall. Summers are typically hot and dry, while winters are mild and wetter. The official tourism authority reports more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year and describes the region as suitable for visits throughout the year.
Swim and relax on the beaches, take a coastal boat trip to see cliffs and caves, explore the Ria Formosa by boat or on foot, hike sections of the Via Algarviana or Vicentina Route, visit historic towns and castles, play golf, and try local seafood.
The Algarve is famous for fresh fish and seafood, especially clams cooked in cataplana, grilled sardines, octopus, oysters, cockles, razor-clam rice and seafood açorda. Regional sweets include Dom Rodrigos, morgados and almond- and fig-based desserts.
