Late spring, especially May and early June, and early autumn, especially September and early October, generally offer warm weather with fewer crowds than July and August. July and August are best for peak beach weather but are busier and typically more expensive.
Puglia is known for its Adriatic and Ionian coastlines, whitewashed towns, trulli, historic cities and castles, ancient olive groves, regional wines, and distinctive food traditions. Alberobello's trulli and Castel del Monte are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Key places include Bari's old town and waterfront; Alberobello and its UNESCO-listed trulli; Polignano a Mare; Ostuni and the Itria Valley; Lecce's Baroque historic centre; Castel del Monte; Brindisi's Roman harbour area; and the Salento coast around Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca.
Allow about 7 days for a focused first visit covering Bari, the Itria Valley and nearby coastal towns. Ten days gives more time for Brindisi, Ostuni, Salento and slower-paced coastal or countryside stops; longer stays are useful for exploring the region in depth.
Puglia can suit different budgets. Current Bari cost data lists an inexpensive restaurant meal at about EUR 15.50, a mid-range three-course meal for two at about EUR 60, and a local one-way transit ticket at about EUR 1. Prices rise in popular coastal areas and during July and August, so accommodation and transport should be booked early for peak season.
Puglia has a Mediterranean-influenced climate with hot, generally dry summers and mild winters. As a Bari coastal reference, average highs range from about 11.6 degrees Celsius in January to 29.5 degrees Celsius in August; August is among the driest months, while rainfall is more common in autumn and winter.
Explore Bari and Brindisi's historic centres and waterfronts; visit Alberobello's trulli and Castel del Monte; tour Lecce's Baroque architecture; swim or take a boat trip along the Adriatic and Ionian coasts; cycle through the Itria Valley; visit olive groves and mills; and sample local food and wine.
Puglia is famous for orecchiette pasta, focaccia Barese, burrata, fresh seafood, legumes and vegetables, local breads, olive oil, and wines such as Primitivo and Negroamaro. Regional specialities also include dishes featuring mussels, including the mussels associated with Taranto.
