A gateway to the Dalmatian Coast, Split is the perfect place to set up camp and explore the gems of the Adriatic. Hop on a ferry or bus and spend days discovering what the coastline has to offer. Nestled in the middle of the Adriatic Sea, the island of Hvar is just an hour away from Split and is a definite must see. Surrounded by crystal-clear sea, this peaceful oasis is a true natural beauty. Steeped in medieval history, the main town of Hvar is set inside 13th century walls and features an impressive hilltop fortress, cobbled main square and Renaissance-era cathedral. Famous for its fine dining and upscale hotels, Hvar is a luxurious escape from the hustle and bustle of Split. Wander through lavender fields, drink wine at the local vineyards and gorge on olives for a day trip to remember.
A sight for sore eyes, the Blue Lagoon sits in between the islands of Drvenik and Krknjasi. Contrasting with the dark waters of the surrounding Adriatic, the terrific turquoise colour of the lagoon and the transparency of the water make it the ultimate location for diving and snorkelling. Take a half day tour from Split and marvel at the collection of marine wildlife found at the bottom of the shallow waters. Just a 30 minute boat ride away, top up your tan on the white sandy shore of the neighbouring islands and relax in the warm waters of one of Split’s best attractions.
A bit of a hike from the centre of Split, Croatia’s first national park is well worth the longer journey. Boasting a chain of 16 terraced lakes joined together by waterfalls, the natural site is listed by UNESCO and is one of the most visited places in all of Croatia. The forest reserve is lined with walkways and hiking trails so you can fully explore the area on foot. Pack your walking boots and head inland for a day of incredible outdoor activity and views that will knock your socks off!
Escape the chaotic tourists covering every inch of Split and pay a visit to the medieval city of Trogir, 30 kilometres along the coast. A unique town, the historic centre is set on its own walled island connected to the rest of the mainland by a series of bridges. Known for its eclectic mix of baroque, Renaissance and Romanesque buildings, Trogir, with its cafes and seaside promenade is the ideal spot for when you fancy a change of scenery.
Venture across the border and visit the Bosnia and Herzegovinian town of Mostar. Two hours in the car, the beautiful city is a worthwhile trip when planning what to do when you visit Split. Spread across the Neretva River, Mostar is known for its iconic Stari Most, a reconstructed medieval arched bridge that connects the two sides of the city together over tall cliffs. Take a step back in time and spend a day wandering through historic streets and alleyways full of small shops and cafes. Be sure to climb the steps to the top of the Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque’s minaret where you’ll be met with stunning panoramic views over the city and its surroundings.
