We’ve rounded up some easy Parisian style tips along with the best places to shop if you want to bag some of that timeless French style on your next trip to the city of lights…
It’s no secret that the French have some of the best style in the world. If you want to dress like a Parisian, there are only a few rules. Keep your skin moisturised (see French pharmacy secrets, below!) and wear minimal makeup, though keep a red lipstick in your bag for a 10 second day-to-night look. Keep your hair in top condition but don’t worry about day-to-day styling (think: Jane Birkin tousle).
Don’t stray from the monochrome wardrobe. A splash of charcoal or navy, if you insist on some colour. Spend more on less – Parisians focus on quality over quantity, opting for simple and elegant pieces. Invest in a classic wool coat, a good pair of black jeans and a crisp white shirt. Stick to the essentials, especially with accessories. Splash out on oversized sunglasses, a black leather bag, black leather boots or shoes. Voila!
Merci: Located on 111 Boulevard Beaumarché, Merci is a concept store in the Marais, whose profits are donated to a charity that supports women and children. Merci is a must-visit, even for window shoppers – their selection of fashion, lifestyle and furniture pieces are immaculately presented and it’s refreshing to know that you’re shopping for a good cause.
A.P.C. is a classic French brand known for its classic, minimalist designs, and it more affordable than you might think as they have a fantastic outlet in the 18th arrondissement. Head to A.P.C. Surplus (20 Rue André del Sartre) and dig through the previous seasons’ stock at massively discounted prices.
La Perle (78 Rue Vieille du Temple) is one of those places to see and be seen. A couple of years ago, John Galliano grabbed headlines here for all the wrong reasons, but La Perle is still popular with the fashion set and you’re sure to spot some of the coolest Parisian style on display. In the heart of the stylish Marais district, the bar hugs the corner of Rue Vieille du Temple and Rue de la Perle, just a couple of minutes from the Picasso museum. La Perle is great to visit at any time of day, from an early morning café crème to trendy late night hangout. The district is also excellent for shopping – keep a few hours free to wander in and out of the shops and boutiques in the area.
If you prefer to drink somewhere a bit more low-key, head to Le Sans Souci (65 Rue Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. The bohemian bar in Pigalle has cheap drinks, a relaxed atmosphere and a hip crowd. If you’re in the mood for dancing, Chez Moune (54 Rue Jean-Baptiste Pigalle) is just across the road.
Elsewhere, Chez Jeannette (47 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis) is a trendy bar and restaurant just the other side of the Porte Saint Denis – one of the old city gates on the edge of the 10th arrondissement. There’s a handful of great bars along here, including Le Mauri7 across the street from Chez Jeannette.
Later on, Le Baron (6 Avenue Marceau) is an exclusive club near Pont de l’Alma with a glamorous lounge adorned with mirrors and velvet. If you can get past the ultra-strict door policy, you’ll be mingling with the in-crowd, fashionistas and celebrities ’til the early hours.
