Just outside of the hustle and bustle of the city centre you will find an oasis of tranquil waters and pebble beaches.

“The Zagreb Sea”, as known by locals, is a wonderfully calm lake with crystal clear waters as far as the eye can see.

This popular attraction offers plenty of activities such as windsurfing, paddle boarding and loads of cycle trails.

If you need to take a break from your walking, there are loads of waterside bars and cafés for you to kick back in the sun and gaze upon the calm waters with a beverage of your choice. Make sure to keep an eye out for the elegant swans that grace the Jarun waters while your there.

Fancy travelling up above the clouds and seeing Zagreb from the sky? Then we recommend that you take a trip to Medvednica National Park.

This massive park has 70 hiking trails to walk your socks off and is home to loads of attractions such as caves, mines, bike trails and even Disney like castles!

If you’re visiting in the winter you can also bring your ski boots along as the national park is also home to a 4km ski trail.

Park Maksimir

On the outskirts of the city you will find what is often considered to be one of Europe’s most beautiful parks. Park Maksimir, founded in the 18th century, is Croatia’s oldest public park and is home to over 100 different bird species and a variety of endangered species.

The park is a phenomenal piece of garden architecture filled with towering hundred year old oak trees. So if you feel like taking it easy with your walking one of the days, we definitely recommend you take a stroll through to park and see some of the fine meadows, lakes and attractions the park has to offer.

Zagreb Zoo

Maksimir park is also home to the enchanting  Zagreb Zoo. Founded in the 1920s, Zagreb zoo is home to over 7,000 animals from all continents across the globe!

From the household names to the exotic, the zoo is host to a wide array of animals such as monkeys, bears, snow leopards, red pandas, hippopotamuses and camels.

A great day out for families and couples, the zoo is only 7 hectares in size so you’ll be able to get around and see all the animals you want in no time.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Our last recommendation is not quite in the capital but at only a two hour drive away, we feel it necessary that you venture to see one of the most beautiful national parks you will visit in your life time.

Situated between the Mala Kapela and Lička Plješivica mountain ranges, Plitvice Lakes National Park is an outstanding attraction that is not to be missed. The lakes received international recognition in the 1970s when it was announced as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the second you arrive you’ll understand why.

Famed for its turquoise coloured waters and stunning hiking trails, Croatia’s largest national park at 300 km2 , is a full day trip experience that we promise you will never forget.

So if you prefer to be active and see as much of a destination as possible on your holidays, there aren’t too many better cities in Europe that offer such a great range of hikes, trails and other outdoor activities as Zagreb.
