Ultimate Foodie Guide to Brive – Vallée de la Dordogne

The Dordogne valley in France is renowned for its rich cultural heritage. Throw in some local ingredients, lots of imagination and you get an exceptional gastronomic experience.

The following is a guide to our favourite local restaurants - whether you’re a vegan or a meat eater at heart, we’ve got you covered.

1. Le Cantou

Treat yourself to a local speciality at Le Cantou. Strategically tucked away from the hustle and bustle in the picturesque village of Collonges La Rouge, this restaurant is a feast for your eyes, ears and taste buds. Sit back, relax and enjoy the countryside charm or watch the pilgrims serenely passing by on their journey along the Camino de Santiago route.  We recommend trying their famous omelettes. Enjoyed for generations, they don’t disappoint.

2. Le petit Moulin

Fancy a glass or two of the local wine? Head to le Petit Moulin, a cosy wine bar located right in the heart of the medieval town of Martel. The pleasant atmosphere paired with a great selection of Correzien wine and snacks will make you want to stay there forever. Its generous opening hours (9AM to 12 AM on weekdays) only play to its advantage. If you’re craving a more substantial meal, order the succulent lamb shank, cooked with local produce.

3. La guinguette de Copeyre

Looking for an unforgettable setting – look no further. There’s no better way to experience traditional cuisine and a friendly atmosphere than eating with the locals. From red and white coloured table tops, to accordions playing in the distance, La guinguette de Copeyre has French charm written all over it. Enjoy calming views over the Dordogne River during the day and come night, this tranquil open plan dining spot transforms into a vibrant social space full of life and music.

4. Le bistrot, Sarlat

Wondering where to dine in Sarlat? ‘Le bistro’ is your answer, simple as that. Combining a rich local menu with current trends and worldwide classics, this restaurant nestled right in the heart of the town is one of our top picks. For a unique gastronomic experience, why not try their mouth watering home made vegetarian burgers, - one of the best burgers I’ve ever tasted. For dessert, we recommend the sorbet. This brightly coloured dessert will not only satisfy your sweet tooth but is also Instagram gold.  Extra points if you guess its ingredients…

5. Café Le Django

Need to find some chill after a long day of sightseeing? Stop by this quirky eco-friendly utopia, located right in the heart of Brive. Le Django has everything you need to awaken your inner hippie consciousness whilst providing a homely and welcoming atmosphere. Take the weight off your feet and enjoy some freshly brewed ice coffee or one of their signature smoothies topped up with whipped cream and a dash of chocolate.

6. Manoir d’Hautegente

From spectacular natural backdrops to scrumptious fine dining cuisine, the Manoir d’Hautegente is the definition of excellence. This hidden gem is only a 20 minute drive from Sarlat, but its captivating beauty and tranquil environment will make you feel as if you’re living in a parallel universe. Pamper yourself with a truly great feast – from drinks to dessert, you’ll savour every single second of it. For the meat lovers out there, be sure to try “Le Perigord”: A selection of Foie gras, smoked breast and duck rillettes paired with a delicious chutney sauce and other condiments. The kitchen also caters for extra dietary requirements upon prior request. Want to feel like royalty for a day? Treat yourself by staying the night in one of the manor’s bespoke rooms.
