Seville: Semana Santa (14th – 21st April)

Taking place during the week that leads to Easter Sunday, Semana Santa (Holy Week) is an important annual event in cities all across Spain, with Seville hosting some of the country’s most colourful festivities.  

This year 's Semana Santa takes place from 14th -21st April.  The traditional ceremonies provide quite the spectacle – expect parades, religious ceremonies and a host of colourful floats in the lead-up to Easter Sunday.

Cherry Blossom Season Bonn/Cologne (Throughout April)

Think pink and hop on a flight to Cologne – April is the perfect time to see nearby Bonn in full bloom. Look forward to an extravaganza of pink flowers from early to mid April. Tip: Wander the confetti- covered streets of Bonn’s Heerstraße and Kölnstraße aka “Cherry Blossom Avenue” for the most picture perfect back-drops.

Bonn itself is a lovely city, offering plenty of other interesting attractions, not least The Beethoven House and museum where you can discover more about the life and works of composer Ludwig van Beethoven.

King’s Day Amsterdam (27th April)

Join one of Europe’s biggest street parties on 27th April, when Amsterdam comes out to play for King’s Day. Revellers dressed in orange fill the streets with music and celebrations in honour of King Willem-Alexander.  Look out for the specially decorated boats in the canals too – grab a spot on one of the many bridges for the perfect vantage point.

Although King’s Day is traditionally a public holiday, a number of attractions including Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and the Rijksmuseum remain open.

Krakow Marathon (April 28th)

April 28th sees one of Poland’s most prestigious running events take place from Krakow’s Main Market Square, passing through some of the city’s most historic monuments and locations. Open to men, women, teams and athletes with disabilities from 55 countries, Krakow Marathon is regarded as the most international and inclusive marathons in Poland.

Budapest Spring Festival (5th –22nd April)

The annual Budapest Spring Festival is the city’s largest event, taking place from 5th – 22nd April. Take your pick from 120 jazz, opera and theatre events at 40 venues across the city including open-air performances in parks and squares. As always, there’ll be special concerts celebrating the works of local hero and composer Franz Liszt. 


This year also commemorates the 100th birthday of American composer Leonard Bernstein. The festival is set to mark the occasion by staging his “A Quiet Place” opera as a joint production  with the Neue Oper Wien.
