Brive – Vallée de la Dordogne for Families

Looking to try somewhere new for your next family holiday? May we suggest Brive la Gaillarde...

This picturesque region of France may be famous for its heavenly cuisine and chocolate box villages, but it also offers an incredible selection of activities that the whole family will love.

Here’s a few of our top family friendly activities in and around Brive la Gaillarde to make your visit a truly memorable one.

1. Paddle on the Dordogne River

There’s no better way to see the Dordogne valley than to take a paddle along its waterway.  Suited to beginners and professionals alike, this fail-safe activity is truly enjoyable for all. Sit back, relax and take in the sights and sounds of the country’s finest natural backdrops. For a comfortable yet scenic experience, be sure to paddle down to La Roque Gageac, one of the most photographed villages in the area. Take a breather on a nearby beach; soak in the warm sunrays or cool off in the river’s lukewarm waters.  For those wanting to try something different, stand up paddle-boarding is an excellent option.

2. Swing a club

Embrace your inner Tiger Woods and head to Souillac golf club. The 18-hole golf course is only 30 minutes away from Brive and its secluded yet easily accessible location makes it the perfect family destination. Make a day trip out of it, or even better, stay the night in one of its bespoke cabins overlooking the Dordogne valley. Learn from the pros and you’ll play like one in no time.

3. Get out and about

Take a walk. Literally. Get up close and personal with the area by exploring it on foot. This region is filled with spectacular walking paths, taking you through idyllic backdrops and French authenticity, all whilst implementing that rural, slow living lifestyle. Join the pilgrims on their scenic journey on the Camino de Santiago route or simply escape the scorching heat by heading to the woodlands. Wherever you choose to go, you won’t be disappointed.

4. Take to the skies

Get an impressive 360-degree birds-eye view of your surroundings by flying in a hot air balloon. Wake up before sunrise and head towards Hautefort where you’ll witness mother nature wake before your eyes.  As night turns to day, the castle Hautefort slowly unravels from the dark until it’s entirely engulfed by sunrays. You don’t have to be a thrill seeker to appreciate this once in a lifetime experience, although fear of heights is, understandably, not recommended.

5. Have a picnic

Discover the area by diving head-first into its spectacular gastronomy scene. Pick up some fresh produce and delicacies from the local market; find a quiet spot to settle and simply enjoy the tranquil ambiance of the French countryside.  ‘Le pont du Saillant’ is the place to go if you’re looking for wonderful views paired with comfortable amenities and playgrounds to keep the children entertained.

6. Pat some ponies

Bring the whole family along to Pompadour – a horse lover’s paradise.  With its rich heritage, vibrant social scene and home to the National Stud Farm, Pompadour ticks all the boxes for a fun day out. During the summer months, regular equestrian events take place, attracting beginners and Olympians alike. From outstanding racecourses, to dressage and show jumping arenas and cross-country fields overlooking the castle, it comes to no surprise that Pompadour truly is ‘the city of horses’. Place a bet at the racecourse to get your adrenaline pumping or head towards the stables where you’ll get a chance to meet some of these magnificent beasts up-close.

7. Restful sleep

Prepare your mind, body and soul for the adventures to come by staying at les Hauts de Magrieres. This off-the beaten-path bed and breakfast offers its guests an intimate setting infused with subtle elegance and jaw dropping morning views.  Start the day right by indulging in a superbly presented French breakfast or, if whether permits, dip your toes in the outdoor pool overlooking the valley.  With two beautiful rooms, this accommodation is sure to deliver an experience that the whole family can enjoy.
