8 mouth-watering Armenian dishes you need to try in Yerevan

Heading to Armenia?  Don't miss these delicious Yerevan delicacies....

1. Lavash

Lavash is a staple of the Armenian diet, so you’ll eat plenty if you plan to visit Yerevan. It’s a delicious, thin flatbread that’s enjoyed with almost every meal. Lavash is made using a clay oven called a tandoor and it was added to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO back in 2014.

2. Dolma

This is one of the most popular delicacies in Armenia. Wrap fresh rice and minced meat inside grape leaves and hey presto, you’ve got Dolma. Herbs and spices are often added to the recipe, with vegetarian variations using lentils, peppers, mint and tomatoes also an option.

 

Dolma is incredibly popular all throughout the Mediterranean, Caucuses and the Balkans… but Armenian Dolma is really special.

3. Gata

Gata is a mouth-watering sweet bread that tastes just as good as it looks. An Armenian specialty, it is normally eaten with tea or coffee and each region has its own unique recipe.

 

A delicious pastry made from flour, milk and sugar that comes in all shapes and sizes. Some variations include a coin and Armenians believe whoever’s piece of gata contains the coin will receive good luck.

 

Yerevan has a growing, modern café culture and gata is a perfect snack to enjoy with a strong cup of coffee.

4. Ghapama

Believe us, you’ve probably never tasted anything like ghapama before. It’s one of the most unique dishes you’ll find during a visit to Yerevan.

 

This is Armenian stuffed pumpkin that’s gutted and filled with boiled rice and dried fruit like plums, apricot, apple and raisins.

 

After being stuffed the pumpkin is baked, cut open and served. Sweet and savoury all rolled into one.

5. Tehaal

This is a popular appetizer enjoyed all over Armenia. Tehaal is preserved meat that’s made from fresh cuts of beef and clarified butter.

 

It’s normally eaten before the main meal along with fried potatoes or rice and is a perfect little appetizer to whet your appetite for the main course.

6. Stuffed peppers

Tasty, hearty and full of flavour; you’ll fall head over heels for Armenia’s sumptuous stuffed peppers.

 

A traditional main course, this dish sees red and green peppers mixed with rice and carrots before being wrapped inside cabbage rolls.

 

Delightful to look at… and to taste.

7. Eggplant Casserole

Eggplant is used in a variety of different dishes in Yerevan and is an important part of Armenian cuisine.

Eggplant casserole is made using basil, parsley, tomatoes and onions and is often enjoyed with a nice dollop of sour cream on top.

 

A dish guaranteed to leave you feeling full.

8. Khash

Khash is an Armenian specialty. This is a delicious soup that’s made using cow’s and sheep’s feet mixed with lemon juice, garlic, salt and vinegar.

It’s an intense combination of flavours that produces a mouth-watering, savoury soup you'll want to try again and again.
