Dominated by the presence of the impressive Hotel Punta Negra, the small bay is ideal for an afternoon of soaking up the sun. Lose yourself in a state of total relaxation as you listen to the sound of the waves lapping the shore. Usually pretty quiet, you’re not likely to be disturbed by hordes of tourists at this sandy spot so you can spread out your towels and take up as much space as you please. Sheltered from the winds and current by pine-woods, find this beach in Fertilia, just fifteen minutes outside the centre of town.

2. Le Bombarde Beach

Less than a kilometre from Lazzaretto beach, Bombarde is the most famous beach in Alghero. Boasting golden, fine sand, volcanic rocks and clear blue waters, the beach is protected by a dense forest of maritime pines, eucalyptus and other tropical Mediterranean plants. Located to the north of the town in the direction of Porto Conte. On the smaller side, this beach can become crowded in the summer months so get there early to make sure you get a spot near the ocean. A great one for families with younger children, with calm waters and tons of activities, rent pedal boats, go scuba diving or try your hand at sailing. With plenty of kiosks and a bar/ restaurant you’ll keep yourselves entertained for hours on end.

3. Lazzaretto Beach

Owing its name to the tower in the small, rocky peninsula that characterises the beach, Lazzaretto is renowned for its transparent, icy waters. Surrounded by numerous coves and sandstone rocks, this beach has a lot to offer and with its calm currents and flat entrance, it’s perfect for little ones. Spend the day snorkelling in one of the surrounding small sandy bays, pedal boating, kayaking, canoeing and relaxing in the heat of summer. Dry yourself off and head to a beachfront restaurant for some stellar seafood specialties or watch the sun dip behind the ocean while sipping on a cool glass of wine.

4. Porto Ferro Beach

This next beautiful stretch of sand is located at the northern end of the Riviera del Corallo and continues on for two kilometres around the island’s coast. Accessible at Capo Caccio, where it is well sign posted, the beach is one of the largest in Alghero and sits on the border between the town and Sassari. Known for its large sandy reddish dunes, the area is usually windy and so is paradise for lovers of windsurfing. The deep bay is kitted out with kiosks, a bar/restaurant, surfing schools and a shady pinewood area that’s ideal for escaping the glare of the sun. Buy an ice cream, slather on the sun cream and welcome summer with a bang at one of the Sardinian city’s best attractions.

5. Mugoni

One of the largest beaches in the area, Mugoni extends for several kilometres and boasts a large pine forest protecting it from the road behind. Here you’ll find fresh, shallow waters to cool off in and a plethora of food places to grab a bite to eat after swimming all morning. Completely sheltered inside the bay of Porte Conte, you’ll be sheltered from any wind. Boasting an emerald green sea and white, soft sand, this two kilometre stretch is paradise on earth. Transporting you to the tropics with its large pine and eucalyptus forest, this is undoubtedly one of the best beaches in Alghero.
