Ryanair Stories: Anne’s Amsterdam

Want to avoid the tourist traps and see the REAL Amsterdam? Who better to show you around than Anne de Buck from Your Little Black Book. We recently caught up with the Amsterdam blogger and she let us in on a few of her favourite places to eat, shop and play in this video guide to her home city…

MOOK Pancakes: MOOK Pancakes puts a new spin on an old breakfast and brunch favourite. Freshly prepared with organic spelt, the café’s mood-boosting options include spinach and spicy chicken, healthy vegan and vegetarian options as well as the awesomely named “mancake” a triple decker tower of pancakes layered with crispy bacon and topped with an egg.

De Foodhallen: Set in the city’s old tram buildings, De Foodhallen is an indoor market space that combines a local Goods Store (great for unique gifts) as well  as several restaurants including Brasserie Halte 3 and Meat West. De Foodhallen comes into its own at lunchtime and is packed with hungry diners on weekend evenings.

Foodhallen, Bellamyplein 51, 1053 AT Amsterdam, + 31 6 29265037, foodhallen.nl, Mon-Thurs 11am -11.30pm, Friday and Saturday 11am-1am, Sunday 11am – 11:30pm

Winkel 43: Apple pie, or “appeltaart” is one of the most prized desserts in the Netherlands. The traditional Dutch recipe features chunky slices of apple baked with cinnamon and sultanas within a soft spongy pastry. For the best in town, head to Winkel 43 located in the pretty canal-side Jordaan district.

Winkel 43, Noordermarkt 43, 1015 NA Amsterdam, :+31 20 623 0223, winkel43.nl, weekdays 8am – 1am, open until 3am on weekends

Amsterdam North

NDSM-Wharf: Rembrandt and Vermeer rule The Rijksmuseum. Museumplein bows down to Van Gogh. So, it’s only right that the city’s street artists should have their very own (highly instagrammable) gallery to call home. Hop on the free ferry to NDSM Wharf and within 10 minutes you’ll be surrounded by stunning street art as well as restaurants, bars and terraces.

DSM wharf (NDSM werf) can be easily reached via the free GVB ferry service which departs from behind the central station. The journey takes around 15 minutes.

Pllek:  Literally translated as ‘spot’ or ‘place’, Pllek is many things to many people, but mostly it’s a café, restaurant, club and in the summer months, the city’s very own urban beach. Visit at lunchtime and you’ll find it teeming with office workers – some even hot desk from here (the wifi is excellent).  At the weekends there are DJ sets, live music gigs and even yoga classes on Sundays.

Pllek, Tt. Neveritaweg 59, 1033 WB Amsterdam, +31 20 290 0020, Mon – Thursday & Sunday  9.30am -1am, Friday and Saturday 9.30am – 3am
