Date Night: Maastricht

It’s your anniversary, your husband’s birthday, the celebration of her new job, or just any other reason to say I love you.

What do you do? Sure, you can book the standard night out but what if you could step it up a notch… tell him how much he means to you or tell her that she really is that special!

My husband and I have set out to explore Europe’s most exciting cities and hidden treasures to give you a tried and tested Date Night itinerary that will blow your loved one out of the water!

DATE NIGHT: Maastricht

Maastricht, located in Holland’s southernmost region, is a lively and energetic city with Spanish and Roman ruins encircled by French and Belgian architecture.

With hoards of university students calling Maastricht home, it’s no surprise that this youthful city has a vibrant cultural scene.

Visit one of the many amazing museums showcasing everything from historical to modern art. Our pick was the Museum aan het Vrijthof, where you will find a slab of 16th-century Spanish colonial architecture from the days of Spanish rule.

Next, take a stroll down the cobbled old town and marvel at the Gothic church of Sint Janskerk and the Romanesque Basilica of St. Servatius or explore a labyrinth of ancient ruined tunnels.

If shopping is more your thing, the Wyck, Rechstraat is lined with little boutiques and shops offering adorable keepsakes of your trip.

Maastricht is also the birthplace to world famous Dutch violinist and conductor Andre Rieu, who is best known for creating the waltz-playing Joann Strauss Orchestra.

If you’re lucky to be in Vrijthof Square during the summer, you might enjoy one of his open-air concerts.

Talk about dialing up the romance. There’s nothing that says, “pulling out all the stops” than dancing the waltz with your love under a blanket of stars.

Need more of a reason to try Maastricht for your next date night? I’ll give you one big one: The Chateau St. Gerlach

Situated in the Geul Valley, on the edge of the Ingendael nature reserve, Château St. Gerlach is nestled among parks, vineyards, gardens, and a church with 18th century frescoes.

Admire the orchards, dine in gourmet restaurants or unwind in the wellness centre. We vote for all three!

Checking In

This luxurious and historical country estate has been converted to accommodate 113 guestrooms, suites, and serviced apartments. Although the rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, you’ll want to explore all that the grounds have to offer.

Drop off your bags and head to the hotel’s cozy lounge and bar to unwind after your trip or if a more active approach is your thing, take a stroll amongst the Baroque gardens or jog around the property on the 5K running trail.

Fine Dining

Château St. Gerlach’s has three dining experiences to choose from, all which use organic ingredients from the estate’s grounds.

We dined at the renowned Restaurant Château St. Gerlach, which occupies three of the Chateau’s traditional and opulently decorated reception rooms and indulged in French inspired classics created by acclaimed chef, Otto Nijenhuis.

The menu was artistically prepared combining elements that excited the senses for a truly unforgettable culinary experience. Impeccable service and a creative wine selection ensured a fairy tale evening of romance.

The estate also offers a gastro-pub setting at the Bistrot de Liège or more light bites and artisan coffees at Burgemeester Quicx, Coffee & More.

Pamper Yourself

At the heart of the estate is the wellness center including a Roman-style swimming pool, sauna and Turkish steam bath.

Located under the arches of the estate’s ancient cellar, Spa & Wellness St. Gerlach combines a relaxing ambiance with a nourishing menu of treatments to pamper body, mind, and soul.

Time truly does stand still relaxing in this spectacular spa. It’s the perfect end to a perfect trip.
