1. Poetto

The main beach of Sardinia’s capital, Poetto stretches for eight kilometres and is one of Cagliari’s biggest attractions. Ideal for families, the white sandy shore starts from Stella del Diavolo and ends at the coastline of Quartu Sant’Elia. One of the longest beaches on the island, grab your towel and spend the whole day splashing in the emerald oceans or tanning under one of the rentable umbrellas and deck chairs. Set against views of the Golfo di Quartu and the stunning hills of the Sella del Diavolo, the beach is backed by two pools one of which is home to the famous pink flamingos. Boasting a full range of facilities from restaurants, kiosks and bars to a plethora of windy water sports, this beach is the perfect place to start your holiday when you visit Cagliari.

2. Cala Regina

Just east of Cagliari town, Cala Regina is the ultimate spot for snorkelling and underwater exploring. With breath-taking scenery and historical watchtowers, this hidden cove is a sight for sore eyes. A little more challenging to reach the extra effort will be well worth it when you’re met with luscious green Mediterranean vegetation, several cliffs, pebbles, reefs and incredibly blue and green waters. There’s no amenities at this place so make sure you come prepared with food and sun-bathing essentials. Wander through the eucalyptus and pine trees to discover this fisherman’s paradise of rugged charm. Undeniably one of the best beaches in Cagliari, this is a definite must-see.

3. Calamosca

Potentially one of the most scenic beaches in the area, Calamosca is a small cave with two cliff faces protecting it on either side, the famous Sella del Diavolo on the west and the ancient lighthouse of Capo Sant’Eila on the east. Hidden from strong winds, the white sands and blue crystal-clear shallow waters of this beach are the perfect hideaway. Adding to its rustic, age-old charm, the beach backs on to a hotel and some historical buildings. Head here for the most spectacular sunset views during your evening drink at Le Terraze and continue on into the bay for nightclubs, open-air bars and restaurants. In close proximity to Cagliari’s historic centre, you can escape the rays of the sun for a while wandering round the cobbled streets.

4. Sant’ Elia

Locally known as Cala Diga, this is one of the lesser visited beaches on the island and won’t be overridden by tourists fighting for towel space. Located right next to the old stadium of the city and Levante de porto pier, the white sands of this beach are a favourite amongst locals and it’s not hard to see why. A real natural beauty, there are no amenities on this beach or lifeguards so again, it is best to come prepared with your beach bags. Take a break from basking in the sun and explore the area. Walk to Torre del Prezzemolo for unbeatable views of the sea and venture out to Fortino di Sant’Elia Ignazio. Finish off a day of seaside relaxing with a meal at the waterfront restaurant Lo Scoglio and sit back as the sun disappears into the ocean.

5. Cala Fighera

A secluded and peaceful retreat, the small, rocky cove of Cala Fighera boasts beautiful views of the sea from above. The rugged landscape of this pebbly beach is not for everyone but the transparent waters and habitat of marine wildlife are worth catching a glimpse of if only for a minute. Tucked away from any winds, the small pebble inlet covered in macchia scrub is just around the headland from the throngs of tourists at Poetto and is the ultimate spot for some cliff diving and snorkelling. Rent sun beds and umbrellas from the kiosk and stop for a bite to eat at one of the island’s best restaurants, La Paillote. An unmissable sight, this beach is definitely one to add to your list of what to do in Cagliari.
