Five Fun Facts about Venice:

-       Cycling, skateboarding and rollerblading are forbidden in the city. It’d be hard enough to cycle down the Grand Canal anyway

-       Until 2010 all gondoliers were male. Giorgia Boscolo became the first female to obtain a gondola licence and is still the only female gondolier

-       Over the last 50 years the population of Venice has dropped from 120,000 to 60,000, and some think it will become a ghost town only populated by tourists         by 2030

-       Venice opened the first public casino in 1638 in an attempt to crack down on illegal gambling

-       According to Venetian folklore, if a couple kisses as they pass under a bridge in a gondola their love will last forever
