What to see in Sofia

One must-see when you fly to Sofia is the Boyana Church. The UNESCO-listed church has been around since the 10th century. Inside this small woodland structure, you’ll find beautiful pre-Renaissance murals. Entry is limited to 15 minutes per group, but trust us, it’s worth every second. Sofia is home to some of the most beautiful churches in Europe and as mentioned above, St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of the city’s most popular attractions.  St Sophia Basilica is another must see. Take a tour beneath the church and you’ll discover a museum showcasing a whopping 18 centuries of history.

In contrast to its ancient sites, Sofia is also filled with incredible works of street art and you could spend hours just wandering around marvelling at the creativity of the local artists. Sofia’s location, at the foot of Mount Vitosha, makes it the perfect city to visit for winter sports.  In spring,  Sofia’s parks and gardens come to life - head to City Garden to see the ballerina fountain, listen to musical performances and watch as locals go head-to-head in games of chess.

 

 

Getting around

Sofia is remarkably easy to find your way around. The Bulgarian capital has an extensive public transport service with a metro, buses, trams and a trolley bus in operation in the city. The local food is rich in eastern influences – you’re certainly in for a treat when you fly to Sofia.

Grilled meat is a favourite with Bulgarians, you should definitely indulge in some Kebapche during your stay. This dish literally translates as “little kebab” and it’s delicious. Tuck into a platter of kofte meatballs and wash it down with some local beer for a real feast.
